Reading project - % complete

This graph shows where I am in my reading project. The pace of reading has changed from the first two chapters (Psalms 1-2) which took several months in the summer of 2006, to roughly a chapter every day or two. (179 this year so far). It's a long and tortuous path for an 11 year old like me. No one of any tradition (or age) does it easily. Now for a week off.
Status of reading project 09-23-2017
It should agree generally with this table since they were both calculated from the same data :)

If I am able to continue without going blind or succumbing to some dreadful calamity, I will finish a full first pass in about 82 weeks, give or take a few, just under 2 years.

Proverbs 25

The last puzzle pieces for the books of truth, ת Psalms, מ Proverbs, and א Job, אמת. I stuffed a few bits in that did not seem to fit well. I was doubting if I could even finish. (Holidays for the next week - no computer.)

There are undoubtedly several pieces under the carpet or stuck in the sofa. But 100% of the poetry is drafted, or read at least once. There is no doubt it will be revisited. Some well-known phrases have bitten the dust as usual, but such is the nature of playing with sound and concordance. I could not use heap, and the coals are just coals, not necessarily burning.

The word order in the traditional English in this section is quite changed from the Hebrew (unnecessarily), as if the translators were unaware of the cadence of the accents. But perhaps the men of Hezekiah had a standard that the traditional English translators have considered awkward.

And they were quinces, of course.

I have stuck with some very early decisions, and I wonder if I could change them. I wonder for instance, if I could eliminate being as a gloss for נפשׁ. Somehow I doubt it, but it is not an optimum gloss. Note the reflection of verse 13 in Psalm 23.

Remember in my tongue, רעה is not neighbour. Associate, friend, shepherd, are the glosses I use for רעה. Love your neighbour etc are רעה, not שׁכן (also glossed as neighbour in some translations). So where you read associate, think (if you are old school) the generic obligatory ethic towards neighbour.

Numbers 25

Moving right along, not my favorite chapter in spite of the mention of Phineas in Psalm 106, the last poem of the 4th book of the psalms, the final poem on the history in the Psalter.

The final verse in the Hebrew is clearly a half verse, a unique verse in the music that ends the chapter on a subdominant rest.

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּשִּׁטִּ֑ים
וַיָּ֣חֶל הָעָ֔ם לִזְנ֖וֹת אֶל־בְּנ֥וֹת מוֹאָֽב

וַיֹּ֣אכַל הָעָ֔ם וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֖וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽן
2 And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods,
and the people ate and they worshiped their gods.

וַיִּצָּ֥מֶד יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְבַ֣עַל פְּע֑וֹר
וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל
3 And Israel coupled itself to Baal-Peor,
and the anger of Yahweh burned in Israel.

4 And Yahweh said to Moses, Take all the preeminent of the people and display them to Yahweh in front of the sun,
and the burning of the anger of Yahweh will turn from Israel.

Offering types again

Just reading the sections in Morrow's book An Introduction to Biblical Law on Sacrifice and gift offerings. I note a helpful simplification of the ideas of offering based on mode of consumption (page 140): unipolar, everything goes to God, bipolar, shared between God and the priests, and tripolar (share also with the laity).

Also I note that the five types listed under these three polarities do not cover the 13 different words associated with offering that I have seen so far. And another comment of his (p 157) on Isaiah 53:10 pointed out to me an additional offering word אשׁם, guilt offering. So 14 verbs so far and some simplifications that do not cover all of them. Also the gift (a very general bipolar offering) מנחה, is often rendered as cereal or grain offering. Glossing is not equivalent to understanding, nor is hierarchic analysis equivalent to understanding. I think understanding is a long way off and a long way away. To what extent can I base my analysis on words? And to what extent must it be based on cult actions and their history?

I am for the most part stuck with words since the data I have is not organized to allow automated historical analysis. This could be done to show what is said and what is not said, but it is another lifetime's project. Such a project Bill Morrow has undertaken. His book is very valuable and very clear, as he is in person as a teacher. He classifies 5 of the 13 words by polarity:

unipolar: burnt offering, עלה,
bipolar: guilt / reparation, אשׁם, sin / purification, חטא, cereal / gift, מנחה,
tripolar: well-being / communion / peace, שׁלם.

Note that the multiple glosses represent various translations (ouch - translation makes the process more difficult). Which polarity does each of these words belong to? This question requires some reading.

2 Chronicles 1

Verse 13 is awkward. Translations correct it without comment. The music takes it as read without so much as a hiccough. So perhaps should I and adjust the ל to an מ and add an ה to Jerusalem. Then it would read from the high place that was in Gibean to Jerusalem. The next phrase is still an awkward apposition but not impossible.

The translations (verse 16) are divided between Egypt (that is in the text) and Cilicia. Que or Kue is near or equivalent to Tarsus (in Cilicia). The sense of the last verses is obscure to me. (In fact the whole chapter is rather awkward and my English worse than usual.) Maybe the Chronicler has his own style or the text is degraded in part. I left Egypt in since that is the word in the Hebrew and the conflict of Israel and Egypt is a regular theme. I get the sense also that there were enough horses for all those foreign kings, the Hittites and the Syrians. They probably took their cut for goods brought from Cilicia through them, as is the the case for trade today in military hardware.

Solomon is painted as a big wheel indeed (as Samuel noted a king would be - 1 Samuel 8 - from my memory of English translations, not yet read in Hebrew). I guess it is obvious that conflict related to governance, special interests, points of view, power struggles, and so on, are pervasive in the texts. There is no prescriptive behaviour here, as if we, as royalty, should go and do likewise. Solomon is to judge his people with wisdom and knowledge, and he will end up also being judged by them, and if Qohelet is his, he will join in his own judgment, or suffer reading it after his demise.

There is an extra verse in the Hebrew, so 2 Chronicles 2 will be out by 1 in the verse numbers when we get there.

No atnach in verse 2 - 40 syllables without a rest! Catch your breath where you can on these long recitations.

1 Kings 1

Recalling 1 Kings 2, this chapter is the background of Adonijah's request for Abishag the Shunamite as his wife. Power, even political power, as well as holiness (I am just reading the sections in Bill Morrow's book Introduction to Biblical Law, on the Holiness code, and the Priestly laws) are strongly in the mind of the time with respect to intimacy, perhaps especially since the denial of the David-Abishag relationship is up front in this chapter. Note also the implied definition of sinners, those who are at odds with the established government of the day.

I have and must slow down my pace since my household has tripled. The 2 year old asked me yesterday for 'the book' I started with him, the hilarious cartoon intro to prayer book Hebrew, Og the Terrible. Og the Terrible עג הרשׁה is a thief of sorts, but he only steals Torah. I would say that most of the kings were pretty good at stealing Torah. I am not sure I would have liked to meet any of them in a dark alley.

2 And his servants said to him, Let there be sought for my lord the king, a virgin lass, and let her stand in the presence of the king, and let her cherish him,
